What to do with swelling of the legs and face before menstruation

Causes of swelling during and before menstruation

The edematous form of PMS syndrome regularly occurs in half of the fairer sex and is almost always considered physiological. The reasons for this phenomenon:

  1. Hormonal imbalance. Excessive secretion of estrogen and lack of progesterone provoke swelling before menstruation. It is expressed in swelling of the chest, face and other parts of the body. Estrogen promotes fluid retention, progesterone promotes its exit from the body. Before menstruation, the secretion of prolactin also increases, too much of which may indicate various pathologies.
  2. Stressful situations. They lead to hormonal imbalances, in particular an excess of the pituitary hormone corticotropin. This leads to reabsorption of fluid in the kidneys and edema both during PMS and on other days of the cycle.
  3. Vitamin deficiency. A lack of vitamins A, B, E and zinc in the body leads to metabolic disorders that affect the occurrence of edema during and after menstruation.
  4. Excess weight. Fat stores are a source of estrogen.
  5. Severe swelling during premenstrual syndrome. Typical for girls with unhealthy kidneys and other disorders of the excretory system. On other days, the body may also swell, but before critical days this manifests itself more clearly.

Swelling occurs before menstruation and during special age periods of development of the reproductive system: at the stages of puberty and the decline of reproductive function.

A little swelling is considered quite normal 3-6 days before your period. It is explained by the fact that under the influence of hormonal processes the uterus increases in size, squeezing neighboring ones and disrupting the metabolic processes of the whole organism.

Reasons for appearing in the morning

This problem can be caused by the following factors:

  1. Accumulation of fluid in the body . Usually the eyelids become puffy in the morning if you eat salty food at night. As you know, salt retains water inside the body, which is why edema occurs. The same effect is observed after drinking alcohol before bed. By eliminating the consumption of salty foods and alcohol, you can prevent the development of this problem.
  2. Incorrect position of the head during sleep . When you sleep, your head should be slightly higher than your body. Otherwise, in the morning you will be looking at a swollen face in the mirror. To avoid this, take your choice of pillow seriously.
  3. Not drinking enough water during the previous day .
As paradoxical as it sounds, to avoid bags under your eyes, you need to drink enough water. If you don't drink enough, your body begins to store fluid in reserve, like a camel.
